We are committed to growing Hua Parakore Kai here in Onaero.
Although we have only been here two years we have established 8 different maara kai that produce enough Kai for most of the year.
We are currently in our Tipuranga year 2 of of the Hua Parakore verification and uphold ngā kaupapa in our growing practices.
This Koanga 2024, we have been setting up new gardens for both Māori taewa and my favorite, the Agria potato. Additionally, we have created a separate pumpkin garden distinct from the kamokamo to prevent any cross-pollination.
.
We have planted 22 fruit/nut trees so far that are still getting their roots established. I have under planted the marjority with a ring of comfrey, mints and calendula.
Our 4 heihei are living their best lives with a diet full of fresh produce, snails and slugs. They gift us 3-4 eggs daily and put up with the boytrous lambs who follow them around the paddock.
The southfacing slopes is now planted with over 900 native trees, the whakaaro was to heal the whenua by rewildening a pasture and restablishing a ngahere. The trees were planted in May 2024 and having been establishing themselves over the winter months.
